These kinds of "tests" are really not accurate. Food Assistance is suppose to be a "supplement" to income they already have. So, most of the time, these people do have some kind of "other" income.
The monthly amount of Food Assistance issued to these people are to supplement their other income, whether it is earned or unearned income.
They really need to be educated on how to budget and handle the money they do have, and use the food assistance to fill in the gap.
I may or may not have all of the facts correct. But this is my opinion.
People think that food assistance is suppose to buy "all" of their food. But this system was put in place as a supplement for them.

On behalf of Ohio's Community Action Agencies and the people we serve, I want to thank both of you for participating in our Food Stamp Challenge. Your insights have been quite educational for many and your commitment is deeply appreciated.

Like you, I have taken the Challenge this week. And, like you, I have faced some interesting issues. On Monday, my dog ate my lunch before I left home in the morning. Should I have prepared another (I did), or should I have gone without eating?

Yesterday, I attended a board meeting of another corporation and lunch was served. As I debated over what to do, I was told, "It's fine. It's free. That cost is within your budget." But, if I truly qualified for food stamps, it is unlikely I would have been on that board and been offered the lunch. I took two pieces of white bread and a couple pieces of turkey. Maybe that was right, maybe not.

Yes, it is an artificial challenge but the awareness created is real. Thank you for helping us. I hope
Congress gets the message that this program is too important to cut.

I recently (2 days ago) received my food stamp card. First time in over 30+ years I've had to ask for help. It is hard to manage and plan meals. I am a good cook, which helps. Thank you both for taking the challenge. I wish more people would so they know how it feels to be hungry. It really does affect your mental state. As you said, all you could think about was planning the next meal. I have so much to be thankful for. I'm thankful for you both for participating.
