Melissa Hensley

Chief Revenue Officer | Northwoods

“At Northwoods, we succeed when we give social workers the tools they need to reclaim their time and focus on the families they serve.”

Melissa Hensley leads with a core conviction: Her real job is clearing the path for her team. As Chief Revenue Officer, she’s ultimately accountable for revenue growth and bookings.

But she measures her day-to-day success by how well she supports her team of six sales professionals. They’re trusted, curious advisors for health and human services agencies across the country.

Her background spans more than 20 years in public sector technology, including leadership roles at Cerner and Google Cloud. The experience that grounds her most came earlier, as a strategist for Colorado’s Office of eHealth Innovation. Sitting on the agency side of the table taught her what state governments need to succeed.

The Path to Northwoods

Melissa spent years running national strategies and managing an 85-person team at a large hyperscaler. She craved something smaller and more mission-driven. Joining Northwoods’ tight-knit advisory team in Dublin, Ohio, has given her that: a direct line to the frontline caseworkers we serve.

She describes Northwoods’ value proposition in plain terms. It’s pragmatic, cloud-native technology that helps agencies unify their data and streamline daily operations. And that means caseworkers get the space and time to focus on the people sitting across from them.

The Problems Worth Solving

Alongside her team, Melissa concentrates on where hurdles are highest for health and human services agencies:

  • Easing the administrative burden on caseworkers in complex areas like child welfare, Medicaid, behavioral health, and SUDS initiatives
  • Breaking down data silos to build real interoperability, so agencies see a complete picture of their clients and families
  • Safely removing the friction that keeps dedicated social workers away from the people who need them

The Northwoods Difference: Empathy, Earned the Hard Way

For Melissa, empathy without judgment sets Northwoods apart. Having navigated state-level modernization herself, she knows how hard change management is from the inside. That perspective shapes how her team works, bringing real-world HHS experience that respects caseworkers’ daily realities.

Her vision looks three to five years out to a future where interoperability is the standard.

Caseworkers have intuitive tools that connect a family’s history across programs automatically. Those tools remove the stress of hunting down fragmented information so they can give clients their full attention.

She defines success in a partnership through the measured lens she brings to everything else. Internally, sound revenue and bookings mean the Northwoods mission is reaching more people. Externally, success is an agency that can definitively say its workers are less stressed and its communities are stronger.

Curiosity in Practice

Curiosity is the Northwoods value that resonates most with Melissa, and it shows in how she leads. She believes you can never assume you know an answer in this field. You have to ask questions and deeply understand an agency’s situation before you can offer anything useful.

She’s data-driven by nature and relies on measured KPIs to keep the business healthy. But “less paperwork, more peoplework” applies internally, too. If a process isn’t helping her team understand customers better or making their own work easier, they fix it together.

She also wants her team to feel safe asking questions. Navigating state contracts is tough work, and they should never have to do it without knowing she has their backs. She’s found that same empathy passes through to how they support the agencies and communities counting on them.

Beyond the Work

Outside the office, Melissa volunteers with her local Food Bank. She says that practice keeps her grounded, grateful, and tied to her Colorado community.

If you ask, she’ll also tell you that her original degree isn’t in tech at all. She earned a bachelor of science in political science from Ball State University. It’s where she first started caring about how policy and government so drastically shape human lives.
